The Journal of Advanced Legal Studies (JALS) welcomes original and academically rigorous manuscripts relating to law, jurisprudence, justice, governance, public policy and interdisciplinary legal studies.

Authors should ensure that their submissions present a clear legal focus, an identifiable scholarly contribution, accurate use of legal authorities and compliance with the journal’s research-integrity and publication requirements.

Manuscript Preparation

  • Use clear, formal and academically appropriate language.
  • Arrange headings and subheadings in a logical order.
  • Define abbreviations and technical legal terms where necessary.
  • Number tables and figures consistently.
  • Provide titles and source acknowledgements for visual material.
  • Maintain consistency in spelling, terminology and citation style.
  • Avoid unsupported, promotional or discriminatory statements.

Legal Sources and Citations

Statutes

Cite the correct title, year, provision and applicable jurisdiction.

Judicial Decisions

Provide accurate case names, citations, courts and decision details.

International Materials

Identify treaties, conventions, institutions and official documents correctly.

Secondary Sources

Cite books, journal articles, reports and commentaries completely and consistently.

Authors should verify whether cited laws have been amended, repealed or replaced and whether judicial decisions have been overruled, reversed or distinguished.

Authorship and Contribution

  • Authorship should be limited to genuine scholarly contributors.
  • All authors should approve the manuscript before submission.
  • The authorship order should be agreed upon by all contributors.
  • Guest, honorary and ghost authorship are unacceptable.
  • Limited technical or editorial assistance may be acknowledged separately.
  • Authorship changes require explanation and agreement from all concerned authors.

Originality and Plagiarism

Submitted manuscripts must be original and should not contain plagiarism, inappropriate paraphrasing, unacknowledged translation or excessive reuse of previously published material.

All quotations, legal arguments, ideas, data, tables, figures and other third-party material must be acknowledged properly. Manuscripts may be examined for textual similarity during editorial processing.

Duplicate and Simultaneous Submission

The same manuscript must not be submitted to another journal while it is under consideration by JALS.

Authors should disclose related thesis chapters, conference papers, working papers, reports, preprints or earlier publications where substantial overlap exists.

Research Ethics and Privacy

  • Obtain ethical or institutional approval where applicable.
  • Obtain informed consent for interviews, surveys or identifiable participation.
  • Protect personal, client, witness and organizational information.
  • Avoid disclosing privileged or sealed legal records without authorization.
  • Apply additional safeguards when research involves vulnerable participants.
  • Describe relevant ethical procedures within the manuscript.

Copyright and Permissions

Authors are responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce protected tables, figures, photographs, substantial quotations, archival materials or other third-party content where required.

The source and rights status of reproduced material should be stated clearly in the manuscript.

Funding and Conflicts of Interest

  • Disclose financial support, grants or institutional sponsorship.
  • State the role of the funding organization where relevant.
  • Declare professional, academic, personal or financial conflicts.
  • Provide a clear statement where no conflict exists.
  • Do not allow sponsors to control findings or suppress relevant results.

Use of Artificial Intelligence

  • Artificial intelligence systems cannot be listed as authors.
  • Human authors remain responsible for every part of the manuscript.
  • AI must not be used to fabricate cases, statutes, quotations or references.
  • All AI-assisted factual and legal claims must be verified independently.
  • Confidential legal information must not be uploaded to unauthorized systems.
  • Substantial AI assistance should be disclosed where required.

Submission and Peer Review

Submitted manuscripts undergo initial editorial screening for scope, originality, academic quality, structure, legal accuracy and ethical compliance.

Suitable manuscripts may be sent for double-blind peer review. Authors should therefore remove names, affiliations and other direct identifiers from the review manuscript where required.

Editorial Decisions

Decision Meaning
Accept The manuscript is suitable subject to final editorial and production requirements.
Minor Revision Limited clarification, correction or citation improvement is required.
Major Revision Substantial changes to argument, methodology, evidence or structure are required.
Reject The manuscript does not satisfy essential scope, quality, originality or ethical requirements.

Preparing a Revision

  • Respond to every reviewer and editorial comment.
  • Prepare a clear point-by-point response document.
  • Identify where changes were made in the manuscript.
  • Correct inaccurate legal citations and unsupported claims.
  • Explain academically where a suggestion has not been followed.
  • Check consistency across all revised files.
  • Submit revisions within the communicated period.

After Acceptance

Final Files

Authors may be asked to provide corrected manuscript and supporting files.

Proof Review

Authors should examine publication proofs carefully and report essential corrections.

Issue Assignment

Publication-ready articles are assigned to an appropriate forthcoming monthly issue.

Published Record

Author names, affiliations and declarations become part of the scholarly record.
